Artist

Sean Busher ~ Photographer

Sean Busher works with his staff, notably Digital Imager Peter Godshall, to create conceptual and often times surrealistic photographic images. Their work targets advertising agencies and corporations whose marketing necessitates images that cannot be captured with a single click. With some images containing as many as 1,000 Photoshop layers, Sean and Peter are able to capture a viewer and really drive the message of their client. Sean's client list includes Bank of America, Wachovia Bank, NASCAR, NC Research Campus, Sona MedSpa and The Duke Endowment.

Recently Sean's work has been on display on billboards and wallscapes throughout Charlotte for Charlotte Center City Partner's Find Your Center campaign, which won a total of four Gold Addy Awards for his company, Sean Busher Photography, Inc. That image involved over 90 models and 11 locations to make the single image which is comprised of 163 Photoshop layers and 14 gigabytes of information. The single image was then cropped in six sections to make the billboards on view around the Charlotte metro area over the last year.

During Sean's talk he will discuss his major projects and how they were assembled. In his relaxed and reassuring nature, Sean hopes his talk will become a conversation with those in attendance. Please bring your questions as we discuss the artistic, spiritual and business decisions that drive his company.

Judy Mizell ~ Watercolor

An ardent naturalist as well as a talented watercolorist, Judy Mizell renders delicate paintings of birds, wildflowers and mammals. Working almost entirely in transparent watercolor, she achieves a skillful blend of beauty and authenticity. Judy feels a wildlife artist must combine artistic ability and creativity with extensive knowledge of subject and habitat. For this reason, she and her husband, Romie, travel across the country and abroad to research her paintings, and he records many of their observations on film to provide accurate references for her. Frequently though, her inspiration is found closer to home in Mint Hill, North Carolina, where the Mizells have transformed their backyard into a friendly habitat for wildlife. Many of Judy's paintings capture these creatures in a garden setting.

Since she began her professional career in 1975, Judy has won many awards and has achieved a national reputation for her delicate yet realistic style. Her work is displayed in the homes and offices of thousands of enthusiastic collectors around the world. In addition to a full line of limited edition prints, her work has been licensed for many other products including collector plate series, greeting cards, gift items and cross-stitch designs.

An active supporter of environmental causes, she frequently donates her work to conservation organizations or fundraising efforts. Because of her strong belief in education, she has given many programs for school children emphasizing the importance of appreciating and protecting the environment.

About her work, Judy says: " As I approach each subject, I try to portray it as accurately as possible, but also attempt to capture some of that uniqueness, that spirit within each creature which sets it apart and makes it appear alive. I want my work to speak to the viewer about the wonders of God's creation and impart the message that we must preserve this wondrous but fragile creation for future generations."

Schelly Keefer ~ Pastel demonstation

Education:
I grew up in the countryside three miles outside the small town of Rocky Ridge, Maryland. This rural upbringing remains a strong influence in my life and work. After attaining a Fine Arts degree from Southern Seminary in Virginia, I lived and worked in many places, from Mt. Saint Helens (I was there when the volcano blew) to the historic Gettysburg area. Living and working in NYC was my next challenge, followed by a move to North Carolina. Once in Charlotte, I acquired a second degree in Interior Design, which helped refine my sense of design and perspective.

Artist Statement:
I paint because I feel compelled to express my feelings and observations about a time, place or person. Images call out to me to capture them on paper. I've had paints and pastels on my hands since childhood and the fascination has never waned. I work in watercolor and pastel, in styles that vary from Realism to Impressionism. The subjects range from the people and streets of New York's Times Square to the hills and streams of my native Maryland. I want to convey to the viewer the essential nature of the subject as it is revealed to me. If one of my paintings expresses the subject to you in a new way, or strikes a chord of recognition in you, then I have succeeded in my role of visual storyteller.

Connie Winters ~ Oil painting demonstration

Connie Winters has emerged as a strong influence on the art scene in the Southeastern United States. Citing the work of classic French Impressionists as an ongoing source of inspiration in her own artwork, Winters naturally gravitates to France, particularly the rural regions of Provence and Dordogne, as locations for her landscapes.

W inters travels to France each year, crediting the provincial lifestyle she experiences there with giving her a renewed sense of spirituality and a fresh desire to create her vibrant landscapes. Her approach to the canvas is that of active observer, intent on recording the interplay of color and light as it progresses in each composition. Through her energetic interpretations of nature and local color, Winters uses the canvas to convey her enthusiasm to the viewer, inviting them to participate in the unfolding scene.

Though most of Connie's time must be devoted to painting, she does put some time into instruction. Connie honored a request from the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC by holding a workshop there in conjunction with the April, 1994, American Impressionist Show . Over the past several years Winters has conducted annual workshops in Matthews, North Carolina and various regions of Europe, particularly the Dordogne region in rural France.

Connie was featured in the February/March 2007 issue of "International Artist" in the article, Pushing Color for Vibrancy. Winters' paintings are found in many notable private and corporate collections including: the personal collection of John Randolph Hearst, Jr., the Coca-Cola Collection, and the Duke Mansion in Charlotte, NC. Her work also resides in the permanent collections of several academic institutions including: Wingate University, North Carolina; and in South Carolina, she is represented at Erskine College and Presbyterian College

Andy Braitman ~ Date TBA

ABOUT ANDY BRAITMAN

Andy Braitman is an artist of national stature. His work has been featured in galleries and in one-man and group shows in Santa Fe, Chicago, Atlanta, Millburn, N.J., Washington, D.C., Noorbeek, Holland, and Rio de Janiero and Curitba, Brazil. He has exhibited at Jerald Melberg, Hodges Taylor, Shain Fine Art and now the Redsky Gallery in Charlotte, and in many other galleries throughout North Carolina. He was chosen by Nancy Reagan as one of America's Leading Artists, along with other notable artists such as Frank Stella and Andrew Wyeth, and asked to contribute a decorated Easter egg to the White House. The egg is now on display in the Smithsonian Institute. He was selected to participate in the prestigious Maryland Biennial Juried Exhibition at the Charles Museum of Art in Baltimore.

Andy was born in Casper, Wyoming and moved to Maryland during his high school years. He attended the University of Maryland, and it was there that he discovered a true passion for art. He took every drawing and art class offered by the university, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in fine arts with minors in physics and art history. He studied physics to learn about light and took anatomy and physiology courses in the nursing school to learn about the human body. He won the Warton Award Grant for Outstanding Senior Artist-in 1972 and in 1974. Because Andy didn't change his major to art until the end of his sophomore year, he was a senior for three years.

His next task was to determine if he could make a living to support himself while he pursued his dream of being an artist. He worked mixing colors in a paint store and as an electrician's apprentice. At times he would work for 6 months in a "real job" to make enough money to paint for 6 months. For approximately 10 years, Andy supported himself solely through the sale of his paintings.

Andy has been an Artist in Residence for Prince Georges County, Maryland and for Edgecombe and Mitchell Counties in North Carolina. In those roles he has been guest lecturer at area colleges, conducted workshops, judged art competitions, and participated in public art projects.

Andy's decision in 1995 to open Braitman Studio in Charlotte, N.C. as an art school coincided with his plans to marry his wife, Carol. The school started with one adult and one teen class, and has grown to about 15 classes and approximately 120 - 150 artists and students. Andy has been surprised at the enjoyment he has found in teaching. His students praise "his many geniuses"- his ability to bring out each individual's own artistic style, his expertise in teaching drawing, his ability to work with students at all levels, and the encouragement and support he gives to every student.
